It’s a given, sequins and metallic fabrics with all their shimmer and shine are dominating the catwalks and window displays everywhere. So with summer party season at our doorsteps isn’t it time to go and grab yourself a bit of the action, with so many choices on offer you can’t go wrong. Or can you?? Please take note when you do go out to try on these party favorites that metallics fall into the same rules of colour along with all other clothing. In fact get this one wrong and you really will look oddly and uncomfortably in the wrong place.
When we want to place a colour we look at three elements. · Value; how bright, dull, light and dark it is. · Intensity; signifies the strength and weakness of the chroma of the colour. · Temperature; the warmth or coolness of a colour is determined by how much yellow or red (warm) or blue (cool) is seen in the colour.
Please look at Imogen Lamports article on colour for a more in-depth look at colour. She explains it with great clarity.
Metallics can be bright and light or dull and dark. Metallics can hold strong vivid intensity (bright shiny finishes) or have a more dull weak intensity (soft and medium sheens) Metallics can be cool (silvers) or warm (golds)
So we need to think about our own coloring and match this to our metallics.
Are you Winter, Summer, Spring or Autumn? · Winter - Best in bright shiny fabrics, look for white, pewter and silvers, lolly pinks and electric blues. · Spring - Best in bright shiny fabrics, go for the golds. · Autumn – Your coloring is lower in contrast so you are best in matt and mid sheen fabrics, choose golds and brassy tone. · Summer - Your coloring is to low in contrast to pull the high shines off. Best in matt or mid sheen metallics, stick to the pewter’s, silvers, Soft pinks or blues.
The aim is to find harmony with the amount of sheen/shine and warmth/coolness in the fabric. It should not overpower you and you should not overpower it.
